A waiting list for club members is in operation - members should email training@helensburghsailingclub.co.uk to be added.  Unfortunately, we are unable to accept any further non-members to our waiting list at this time.

Our team of RYA instructors can provide a wide range of RYA training courses for both sail and power.  These include Stages 1-4 of the Youth Sailing Scheme, Levels 1-3 of the National Dinghy Scheme, Advanced Modules of the National Dinghy Sailing Scheme, Powerboat Levels 1&2, Safety Boat Certificate and First Aid.  Courses are aimed at HSC members, however temporary membership is usually an option for short courses.

Susan Miskelly took over the role of Principal and Rear Commodore Training from Sarah Jeffrey at the end of the 2018 season. We extend a huge thank you to both of them. The club has been fortunate to have two such experienced and dedicated members in this important role.

Sail Training – Juniors:

Junior sailing took place across two evenings in 2021 with a total of 36 Juniors attending, a slight increase on previous years.

Summer Week:

The summer week in July was attended by 20 junior sailors – we had fabulous weather and the sailors all made great progress as well as having loads of fun!

RYA Coaching:

To help our junior sailors dust off the ‘lockdown-cobwebs’, the RYA provided us with 6 coaching days for our Optimist and Topper sailors in April this year.  These ‘back to the water’ sessions ensured a great start to the season for the 16 HSC juniors who signed up to attend.

Instructor Training/Development:

With a focus on up-skilling the training team this year, HSC hosted an RYA Senior Instructor course, an RYA Dinghy Instructor course and an RYA Race Coach Level 2 course. Congratulations must go to Daniel Tait who qualified as a Senior Instructor and Eilidh McQueen and Robbie Littlefield who qualified as Dinghy Instructors.  All three also achieved their Race Coach Level 2 qualification this year, as did two other HSC members.

Two of our training team helpers qualified as Assistant Instructors this year and we look forward to supporting them towards their Dinghy Instructor qualification over the next year.

First Aid Training:

HSC hosted an RYA First Aid course in May, enabling 7 instructors and members to gain, or re-validate, this qualification.

Saturday Morning Recreational Sailing Sessions:

These sessions were scheduled to take place over 6 Saturdays in July and August.  My thanks to our PB2-qualified parents who support these sessions by taking their turn in the safety boat.

No training can take place without the hard work and dedication of all the club instructors, assistant instructors and helpers.  My thanks to everyone in the 2021 training team and a special thank you to Daniel Tait/Sarah Jeffrey for leading Tuesday night junior sailing.
