Unfortunately, due to Covid-19 restrictions, no junior training took place in the first half of 2020. We eventually managed to restart in August and a total of 26 Juniors attended on Monday or Tuesday evenings.  Due to the much-shortened season, and the various covid-safe measures that we had to take, we didn’t work towards the RYA Stages in 2020 but instead focused entirely on having fun!

Powerboat Level 2:

In February/March 12 adult and youth students took part in a very successful Powerboat Level 2 Course.  It was a wee bit chilly out on the water during the practical sessions but it was great fun and brings a couple of our Assistant Instructors a step closer to achieving their dinghy instructor qualification.

 First Aid Course:

An RYA first aid course, with 12 students, took place in February.  This ensured that several of our instructors were revalidated and other members were able to update their knowledge and skills.

Instructor Training/Development:

We were delighted to welcome a new helper this year and look forward to working with her to achieve her Assistant Instructor Qualification. Two of our helpers from last year have now qualified as Assistant Instructors and hope to progress to their Dinghy Instructor course in 2021. We are also aiming to have one of our Dinghy Instructors achieve their Senior Instructor qualification before the start of next season.

Weekend Recreational Sailing Sessions:

One of the first activities we managed to restart, whilst following the RYA and Government Covid-19 guidelines, was ‘recreational’ sailing.

These sessions took place over 11 Saturdays/Sundays between June and September.  They were very well attended with between 12 and 17 boats regularly getting out on the water.  My thanks to our PB2 qualified parents who support these sessions by taking their turn in the safety boat.

RYA Coaching:

In August/September we organized 6 RYA Coached mini-academies, exclusively for HSC Junior sailors.  18 sailors took part and each was able to attend two coaching sessions.

No training can take place without the hard work and dedication of all the club instructors, assistant instructors and helpers.  Thank you to everyone in the 2020 training team.

A special thank you must go to Jenny Abraham who has decided to retire from the training team.  Jenny has been an invaluable part of the team for many years - latterly as the Senior Instructor for Tuesday night junior sailing - and so, on behalf of the training team and the club thank you!
